Good Morning and Good Night from the InsideOut
Full experience (adults) @ 5:00 PM
Feb 3 2018 5:00PM
Ravel, Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2 and Brahms, Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73
What does it feel like to be inside a sunrise? Audience members will find out at this event, where the orchestra will perform Ravel’s second suite from his ballet Daphnis et Chloé. Composers have been obsessed with depicting sunrises through music, but the sound-picture of a sunrise, painted by Ravel in this work, is absolutely unforgettable. This will be followed by Brahms’ extraordinary Second Symphony, a journey of sublime beauty and passion that also contains his well-known lullaby. Tis concert will also feature noted astrophysicist Dr. Jackie Faherty, Senior Scientist in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. To augment InsideOut's multi-sensory experience, Dr. Faherty will discuss the science of sunrises and sunsets with the audience prior to each work, exploring the impact of these cosmic events on nature at each point in the process, something that is shown in great detail within Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe. Dr. Faherty, recipient of the National Science Foundation International Research Fellowship and the NASA Hubble Fellowship, frequently appears as a lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium and is NYC's resident Astrophysicist designated to set the exact date and time for "Manhattanhenge" each year.
"Family Experience" concert at 2:00; "Full experience" (adults) at 5:00.
