An unremarkable backyard to two houses in a small mid-Western town is the setting for Paul Osborn’s endearing 1939 comic drama. The houses (plus a third one a few blocks away) have been home to four sisters -- and the husbands of three of them -- for their entire adult lives. Complications develop and crises accelerate on a quiet Sunday afternoon when Homer, the long-term bachelor son of one of the sisters, brings his long-suffering girlfriend, Myrtle, home to meet the folks. During the course of the ensuing evening and following morning, all nine characters must examine the assumptions and foundations of their well-worn routines, and discover new and meaningful paths to their next stage of life.
