Our fourth installment of the acclaimed Masters in Collaboration Series pairs Grammy-winning Riverdance composer/pianist BILL WHELAN with renowned Suzuki-trained violinist ATHENA TERGIS for two exclusive performances in the 99-seat Donaghy Theatre, accompanied by percussionist ROBBIE HARRIS, a nine-piece orchestra, and a live dance performance by Riverdance star MICK DONEGAN.

For more than three decades, producer-composer-musician Bill Whelan has broken ground across musical boundaries, ensuring the relevance and dynamism of Irish music in the 21st century. His compositions and adaptation for film, theatre and orchestra include Dancing at Lughnasa (starring Meryl Streep), Some Mother’s Son, The Seville Suite, The Spirit of Mayo (National Concert Hall), HMS Pinafore (Olivier nomination), and, of course, the Grammy-winning score for Riverdance. A former member of Planxty, Whelan has produced or arranged records for such artists as Andy Irvine, Stockton's Wing, Davy Spillane as well as Kate Bush, Van Morrison, and U2.

Suzuki-trained violinist and composer Athena Tergis has performed in traditional, classical and pop settings all over the world – from Riverdance on Broadway to the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing to national tours with E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemmons to Absolutely Irish!, the all -star concert documentary filmed live at the Irish Arts Center in 2007.

Launched by Irish Arts Center senior artistic associate Mick Moloney in 2008, the Masters in Collaboration Series creates partnerships among artists outside the pressures of the marketplace in an effort to stimulate creativity, reward risk, and awaken a dynamic musical conversation between Ireland and the United States.

Masters in Collaboration IV marks Bill Whelan’s first New York performances since the phenomenal success of Riverdance.
