The painter known as Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi) cannot reconcile his ambitions with his appetites. His lovers and friends, who are also thieves and prostitutes, are his models for all that is dark, holy and troubled in a God-infused yet decadent Rome. As he rises in fame, the liberties he takes leads to heated arguments with those he loves and finally to a reckless murder which causes him to flee Rome. During his fights and flight, he wrestles with his Angels (Darkness, Desire, Light, Correction and Sorrow) as he refuses to humble himself before God's judgment. A hot, indifferent sun on the malaria coastline threatens his sanity. His only respite is remembering the sorrow at the core of his bravado – his love for a young man who came to him off the streets to live in his studio without hope and without fear.
