La Bestia: Sweet Mother is a multi-media theatrical reconsideration of humanity's earliest creation myths. Although the audience may believe they are in small black-box theater in the East Village, in point of fact they will have arrived on the once-a-year feast day, when our first ancestors gathered to give thanks, and try and understand how and why this earth began. The underpinning imagery in the work comes directly from these earliest myths -- Babylonia, Sumerian, Greek, Hebrew, Zoroastrian and others. The ultimate message is that creation (of being and time) and destruction (of eternity) are interlinked and perhaps the same thing.

The narrative and characters provide a structure for the music, dance and chorus. This work is marked by stylized movement and words that bleed into the "mythical." A dancer, chorus and cello create the emotional carriage that takes the audience into our deepest shared past -- and into that place where the ultimate questions were considered.

The title is taken from La Bestia freight train, also known as "the train of death," a series of freight trains running through Central America to the border with the United States. The trek on the train has been described as running a gauntlet of bribery, extortion, rape, kidnapping and murder, simply to arrive at the U.S. border.
