In Ancient New York, true prophets, false prophets, non-prophets and revolutionaries battle for the soul of the city. In the world of this play, being a prophet is a more integrated activity than it is in our current culture. The idea of being "seized by a spirit" is more prevalent in "ancient New York" than in our culture where it is relegated to backwoods churches, etc.
The play takes place in the heightened atmosphere of a city in peril. Revolutionaries as well as prophets pursue the salvation of the city through extreme measures. The urban revolutionaries that populate the play are reminiscent of radical groups from the 1960's (The Weathermen, for example). But this play is NOT a period piece about the 60's because many of the issues it deals with – a city under threat, the arrogance of power, the blind certainty of dissent - are ancient and current.
