In St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1835, the social classes are stringently held in place by those in power. When Poprishchin, a lowly clerk, falls in love with the daughter of a royal family, he is driven slowly to madness by his inability to accept his place in the world. Soon, he has invaded an imagined correspondence between a couple dogs and has ascended the vacant throne in Spain. The Diary is a play about unending ambition and the boundaries that keep us from achieving our deepest desires.
