Young Pacien Mazzagatti, appointed Principal Conductor at Dicapo Opera last season,brings astonishing control and sensitivity to his performances. With 860 performances of some 69 roles to his credit, the veteran character tenor Anthony Laciura will direct Rigoletto. Verdi's enduring masterpiece of revenge and retribution toys with our emotions: a womanizing Italian duke, the girl he seduces, and her court jester father, the hunchbacked Rigoletto. Based on Victor Hugo's groundbreaking and controversial romantic play le roi s'amuse, Verdi's operatic tragi-comedy sounds the power of Rigoletto's fateful malediction in the very first notes of the overture. Despite Rigoletto’s murderous plotting, his love for his daughter Gilda—captured so poignantly in the duet at the end of Act II—breaks our hearts. The polyphonic "bella figlia dell'amore" remains one of the great operatic quartets of all time.
