Oedipus At Colonus
Thursday, January 10, 2008 through Saturday, January 26, 2008
An outcast ascends from the rubble of a tortured past
Length: 1 hr 55 mins Intermission: None Seating: General Admission You choose your seats when you get to the theater.
Stained by the unwitting crimes of his past, a blind and aging Oedipus roams the earth in exile from the city that once hailed him as a savior. Happening upon the sacred grove prophesied as his final resting place, he prepares to enter the next life and put his troubled history behind him.
At the very moment of this seeming deliverance, warring factions from the city that once banished Oedipus try to compel his return, hearing from an oracle that his presence now offers supernatural protection. Oedipus resists them, determined in his final moments to be free from corruption and strife. Written by Sophocles in his ninetieth year, Oedipus at Colonus is his final, conciliatory reflection on humankind: Hobbled by the baseness of this world yet capable of transcendence.
