Flying Fig Theater is proud to present THE GUT GIRLS by Sarah Daniels from July 17 - August 7, 2005 at The Chocolate Factory (5-49 49th Avenue) in Long Island City, Queens, just one subway stop from Grand Central on the #7 train. This production marks the play's first major revival since its NYC premiere in 1993. The "gut girls" of Deptford, England, circa 1900, are rowdy, boisterous, have mouths like sailors and are as strong as the oxen they gut. By day they are up to their knees in freshly slaughtered animal entrails, but in the evenings they are their own women, financially independent to a degree rare for young working-class women in Victorian/Edwardian England. Enter Lady Helena, an aristocrat on a mission to teach the gut girls some manners and get them employed as domestics. The result is a total surrender of their independence, spirit, and way of life.
Flying Fig Theater Benefit Night, Thursday, August 4th, 2005. A performance of The Gut Girls followed by a reception with the Company. Special ticket price: $30. |
