Dicapo Opera Theatre’s 2009-10 season leads off with Tobias Picker’s phenomenal American opera Emmeline, the first new production this work has seen since it was premiered by the Santa Fe Opera in 1996. “It boasts lovely writing for voice; a poetic libretto; streamlined, dramatic pacing; vivid orchestra; and a title role that any soprano would kill for,” wrote Heidi Waleson in Billboard. Based on the true story of a woman ostracized by her hometown in Maine after a shocking, long held secret becomes public, Emmeline transcends melodrama to lay bare the raw beauty of love. Robert Alföldi, director of Hungary’s National Theatre in Budapest, returns to Dicapo to direct after his piercingly effective staging of Robert Ward’s The Crucible last season.
