Ripe For The Picking tells the story of Gzifa Moyo, an empathetic NYC journalist who is called upon from her past to rise and become her own hero.
After receiving a letter from a distant cousin in Ghana, Gzifa creates the television series, Huenity Crisis, to reach out to others like her cousin, those ripe for the picking, and through this medium successfully exposes a variety of heart-wrenching atrocities happening all over the world. Inspired by the stories, she crosses the globe to meet Nameless, a former prisoner of China’s Laogai (labor prisons); Radhika, a young woman trafficked from Bombay’s Red Light District to Moldova; Apedomessi – a young spirit sold into Ghana’s Trokosi System (Child Sex Slavery) at 11 years old; and many more.
As the interviewed divulge their horrific narratives, using a blend of poetic monologues and dialogue, and music, Gzifa becomes increasingly drawn to them and learns that if we can experience together we cannot fail apart. She risks everything to join the fight for international equality, and renews her vow to rescue her cousin.
Nevertheless, the question remains, how far will she go on her quest to explore the depths of human conflict, suffering and the fear of losing her own humanity?
