Enjoy a rare English-language performance of Rakugo, the classic Japanese comic storytelling entertainment now wildly popular in Japan. Takase Kazuki, acclaimed director of Theatre Japan Productions, Inc will direct Obie Award-winning artist Karen Kandel from Mabou Mines in the hilarious tales by Chikamatsu , “Miracle Painter” in Rakugo style. Traditional music of shamisen will be played by Masayo Ishigure.
Rakugo (literally “fallen words”) is a Japanese verbal entertainment where the story teller sits on the stage alone and depicts a comical and heart-wrenching story, portraying various characters without standing up from the seiza sitting position. The performance is usually accompanied by musical effects or live music. Today, Rakugo performances may be found regularly on TV, on YouTube, and in live performance venues all over Japan.
