Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, a psychological drama exploring the human struggle for power, security, trust, and friendship, is classically portrayed by men wearing togas and ivy wreathes. However, in the Bushwick Shakespeare Repertory’s upcoming production, those togas are traded for school uniforms and ivy wreathes for bouffant hairstyles. BSR’s Julius Caesar features an 8-woman cast playing 30 roles, and is set in an all-girls’ boarding school in 1960’s northeast America. In this application of the ancient tale, we see how hierarchies and manipulation are just as common in schools as in the world political arena, and just as dangerous.
