A Tribute to 50 Years of Service by LCDR. Sutherland (ret)
Sunday, August 29, 2010
Come Celebrate!
Additional Notes: Please consider buying a T-shirt or contributing a donation to help offset the cost of this celebration! In the event of any overage the proceeds will be forwarded to the USCG Foundation
LCDR Stewart Sutherland (ret) enlisted in the USCG on 30 August 1960. In his retirement he became an active and vital member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in the port of New York and New Jersey. He will be celebrating his 50th anniversary as a member of the Coast Guard family this year.
THIS IS A SURPRISE SO DON’T TELL STEW or CAROL!!!
Throughout the years he has served his nation from the jungles of Vietnam to the frozen wastes of Antarctica. His contribution to the USCG during peace and war has rarely been rivaled. His civilian contributions as a scientist and marine biologist at Columbia University's Lamont Earth Observatory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute continue to expand our understanding of our oceans and climate.
As an Auxiliarist he serves hundreds of hours a year and maintains the largest facility in the Auxiliary, the former USCGC Point Brown, now known as the M/V Lady B. This facility provides Auxiliary members with a unique opportunity for training that can be achieved nowhere else. He is also a regular presence standing the watch at Station New York and working in the Water Way Management office at Sector New York. His dedication has exponentially increased the body of knowledge, professionalism and effectiveness of the Auxiliary, allowing the 1SR to truly be “first and foremost” in the nation.
