Sunday, August 29, 2010
Come Celebrate!
Additional Notes: Please consider buying a T-shirt or contributing a donation to help offset the cost of this celebration! In the event of any overage the proceeds will be forwarded to the USCG Foundation
LCDR Stewart Sutherland (ret) enlisted in the USCG on 30 August 1960. In his retirement he became an active and vital member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in the port of New York and New Jersey. He will be celebrating his 50th anniversary as a member of the Coast Guard family this year.
THIS IS A SURPRISE SO DON’T TELL STEW or CAROL!!!
Throughout the years he has served his nation from the jungles of Vietnam to the frozen wastes of Antarctica. His contribution to the USCG during peace and war has rarely been rivaled. His civilian contributions as a scientist and marine biologist at Columbia University's Lamont Earth Observatory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute continue to expand our understanding of our oceans and climate.
As an Auxiliarist he serves hundreds of hours a year and maintains the largest facility in the Auxiliary, the former USCGC Point Brown, now known as the M/V Lady B. This facility provides Auxiliary members with a unique opportunity for training that can be achieved nowhere else. He is also a regular presence standing the watch at Station New York and working in the Water Way Management office at Sector New York. His dedication has exponentially increased the body of knowledge, professionalism and effectiveness of the Auxiliary, allowing the 1SR to truly be “first and foremost” in the nation.

Andrew Johnson
Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Award-winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed discusses the 17th President.
Additional Notes:
BECOME A SOCIETY MEMBER AND SAVE 50% ON TICKETS!
Andrew Johnson never expected to be president, but just six weeks after becoming Abraham Lincoln's vice president, he was thrust into the nation's highest office. Johnson faced a nearly impossible task — to succeed America's greatest chief executive and to bind the nation's wounds after the Civil War. Annette Gordon-Reed shows how ill-suited Johnson was for this daunting task. His vision of reconciliation abandoned the millions of former slaves and antagonized congressional leaders, who tried to limit his powers and eventually impeached him.
Annette Gordon-Reed is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy and The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. She is Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, and the Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University. Her latest book is Andrew Johnson, in the American Presidents Series.

April Bird Walks
Saturday, April 10, 2010 through Saturday, April 24, 2010
Spring Migration walks in the Ramble with Alan Messer
Additional Notes:
In the heart of New York City's bustling metropolis, Central Park's 36-acre Ramble is a bird watcher's paradise, where more than 270 species have been spotted in a single year. With New York being located along one of North America's busiest migratory routes, the spring months are an ideal time to spot the city's avian visitors on their trip north.
Journey with wildlife artist and illustrator Alan Messer to some of the most magical places in Central Park's wooded Ramble, discovering along the way both resident and migrating birds. Walks are limited to 35 guests per tour.
During the April walks through Central Park's Ramble, we will search for resident, late winter, and early migrants, including common birds at feeders. Chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, finches, and sparrows may be seen at this time.
Alan Messer is a wildlife artist and illustrator of books, field guides, and periodicals. He is a former president of the Linnaean Society of New York. Mr. Messer's illustrations are included in the exhibition, Focus on Nature XI, on view at The New York Museum, Albany, New York from April 12 through October 31, 2010. His paintings may be viewed at alanmesser.net.
