The famous actress, the actualEleonora Duse was born in 1858 in Italy into a family of strollingplayers descended from Luigi Duse, the first actor to remove the maskin Commedia dell ‘Arte and use his natural face to portray the rascalnamed “Giacometto.” Eleonora suffered the miseries of touring fromthe age of four but was awakened to the art of acting at age fourteenwhen she played Juliet in Verona, the town where her father met hermother. Duse had a strong emotional connection with her mother whoheld her hand and comforted her when they often had to walk from townto town behind the wagon carrying the props and scenery. LOST! is a show based on interviews with clowns, clown games andthe author/performer Nathalie Ellis-Einhorns experiences with clowntraining. Uniting all these elements together is the theme of failure.Clowns fail again and again, but despite all logic to the contrary,believe that things will be different the next time. Nathalies clown,dubbed Little Snotty after her tendency to cry and even leak snot outof her red nose during exercises in clown class, is a BIG failure. Butshe doesnt know how to cultivate the clowns irrational hope. Wefollow her through encounters with birthday, hospital, and theatreclowns who discuss failure and why they keep pouring all their work,pain and love into something thats sort of dumb and useless. Why dowe commit ourselves and our time to creating any type of art even whenit hurts us and can never be perfect?
