Additional Notes:
This play is about an ensemble of female actors, who arrive at thetheatre to begin rehearsals on Shakespeare's Henry V. Little do theyknow they will encounter an ensemble of a male dominant Henry Vproduction that is already there in intense rehearsals. The men cannotcome to terms with the fact ladies are trying to run the show, andwhen a thespian battle of the sexes takes place, the female cast islead by Mary V. Mary is transformed from the passive pawn she was inthe hands of her husband in Shakespeare's 16th Century original HenryV into a modern fierce, ferocious and feisty Amazonian warrior, whosettles for nothing less than pure victory in this riveting modernadaptation. In 2016, Mary does not beat around the bush and is the onewho wears the pants. Queen Mary is not afraid of a good old fist fightand when both sides refuse to back down the battle takes some uglyturns. These male and female thespians-turned-gangster artists arelivid about having to share space and resources and about theimplications that their genders' have on their artistic expression andcreative work.

When it debuted, THE EFFECT took London by storm, winning BEST NEW PLAY from the UK Critics Circle. Now, award-winning director David Cromer (OUR TOWN, TRIBES) helms a new American production of this exhilarating play in the first collaboration between THE NATIONAL THEATRE, JEAN DOUMANIAN PRODUCTIONS and BARROW STREET THEATRE.

Hearts racing. Minds reeling. Knees buckling. Connie and Tristan have palpable chemistry—or is it a side effect of a new super-antidepressant? They are volunteers in a clinical trial, but their sudden and illicit romance forces the supervising doctors to face off over the ethical consequences of their work.

From Lucy Prebble, “one of the UKs hottest new playwrights” (The Telegraph), THE EFFECT takes on our pill-popping culture with humor and scintillating drama.
