New Chamber Ballet Season Opening

Venue: ( City Center Studio 5)

Producer: ( New Chamber Ballet)
New Chamber Ballet
City: New York

Additional Notes:

New Chamber Ballet opens its 2017/18 season with a program of five ballets by Miro Magloire with live music on violin and piano:

The World Premiere of a new duet to music from Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.

The revival of Lace, a ballet that conveys a sense of ritual: whenever (one dancer) is performing a short solo, the other two sit on the floor in poses that call up images from Greek friezes… Their calmness is a nice contrast to the intricacies of the solos and Berio's virtuosic Sequenza VIII for solo violin. (Deborah Jowitt, The Village Voice.)

The revival of 104 Fahrenheit, to Magloire's own score, in which the three dancers each have solos which express the effects of summer heat - from languid to frenzied. Pianist Melody Fader turns the demanding score into a tour de force. (Philip Gardner, Oberon's Grove)

Voicelessness, a duet to piano music by Best Furrer. A cool and dispassionate examination of shapes, full of complex lifts... it had a hypnotic fascination. (Mary Cargill,

Amity, set to Mozart's violin sonata in C Major K.296. Right from its airy start, Amity captivates as the four dancers - in gossamer costumes - flit and fly about the space like golden birds... The concluding Rondeau sparkles both in the dancing and the playing. (Philip Gardner, Oberon's Grove)

Performers include Sarah Atkins, Elizabeth Brown, Kristine Butler, Traci Finch, and Amber Neff. The music will be played live by Doori Na (violin) and Melody Fader (piano).

It's heartening to see work so focused on the meeting of dance and music. -Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times

Amity was commissioned by Edward Petrou in memory of Rachel Petrou. The new Bach duet was commissioned by Leslie and Richard Curtis.

Romance of the Western Chamber - the musical
A musical adaptation of the fabled Chinese classic, Xi Xiang Ji. Two young lovers fly in the face of tradition and parental disapproval in 9th century China.
Venue: ( TADA! Theater)
TADA! Theater
Producer: ( Wildly Productive Productions/Bob Ost)
Wildly Productive Productions/Bob Ost
City: New York

Additional Notes:
Previously produced in China for the very first time in English in 2011, and known as China's most popular love story, Romance of the Western Chamber tells of a young couple from different classes consummating their love despite parental disapproval and unpromising circumstances. Think Romeo and Juliet as a poor student/rich girl romance, aided by a clever, scheming maid who helps them overcome daunting obstacles: an imperious mother, a prior betrothal and an attempted abduction by a cruel bandit. All played out against the exotic background of the surprisingly liberal 9th century Tang dynasty, with a haunting, evocative score combining Eastern and Western musical influences.
