Dances Of The Archipelago

Experience the dances of the archipelago
Additional Notes: Saung Budaya is an Indonesian Dance Group based in New York City. It was founded by
Amalia Suryani in 2005 with intention to introduce Indonesia’s culture through music and
dances. The group has presented an array of traditional and contemporary art and culture
of Indonesia.
Over the last eight years, Saung Budaya has performed in many dance festivals and events
such as the opening of New York Marathon, Asia Society, Meet the Artist in Lincoln Center,
and many more.
As a celebration of dance, Saung Budaya has an annual show with a different theme each
year. This year, we are proudly presenting four regions of Indonesia through a show titled
“Dances of the Archipelago.” It will be held on June 16th 2013, located in JCC in Manhattan
in The Goldman-Sonnenfeldt Family Auditorium, 334 Amsterdam Ave at 76th Street, NY, NY
10023, and starts at 7 pm. Tickets will be $18 each.
In Dances of the Archipelago, cultural splendors from Indonesia will be put on stage. There
are Indang and Plate dances from West Sumatra. Indang is performed with each dancer play
a tambourine used as a musical instrument, while Plate dance uses plates that symbolically
means men who are honest have to bravely face all risks. Njot-njotan is a marvelous dance
with expressive movements from Jakarta and Saman is one of the most popular dances
from Aceh. It’s also known as the dance of a thousand hands characterized by its fast-paced
harmonious movements. It was originally performed to celebrate noble occasions, as well as
to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

Friday Night Sunset Sails!
Friday, May 24, 2013 through Tuesday, October 01, 2013
"The best after-work summer chill in NYC" - New York Times.
"One of the hidden treasures of New York" -- Voyages TV
Come aboard and enjoy the first night of the weekend aboard a wooden sailing yacht and sail off to the sunset!
Additional Notes: The Ventura sailing experience is both upscale and casual.
Every Friday evening in summer, this beautiful, private sailing yacht welcomes individuals, couples, or small groups aboard, by reservation only, for a unique cruise in New York Harbor. (On weeknights and Saturday nights, Ventura hosts private and corporate events.) Friday sunset guests are permitted to byo wines, picnic snacks, etc -- no hard liquor allowed -- or self serve from the ship's bar. Background music compliments the engine-free sounds of wind and waves aboard this true wooden ship.
Commissioned in 1919, she first started sailing in New York waters in 1922. Her original appointments feature varnished teak decks, mahogany cabins and gleaming brass oil lamps. On public sailing trips, guests can buy from 1 to 35 seats (total capacity) on regularly scheduled Friday evening sunset sails to the Statue of Liberty.
Click here for a short clip of sailing on the Ventura!
Friday nights are most popular with people looking to relax after work, enjoy a beer or glass of wine. Not a booze cruise. Guests are individuals, some on dates, and even a mini b-day party with a group of friends.
You are welcome to byo wines, snacks -- no corkage fees or related b.s. Unique to New York, on Friday evening the Ventura offers her guests a unique, self-serve, keep your own tab beer/ale (awesome selection of micros!) and wine bar. Very handy in case you're running late or don't want to schlep.
Sails are very popular and often sold out. If you are bringing a group, it is best to reserve early. On the week of the sail, you can usually get small numbers of tickets (singles, two/three/four) as late as mid week. If the boat is sold out, you can stand by. Space available means welcome aboard! And it is a very nice place to hang out even if you do not get a seat aboard.
Friday skd: 6:15 pm boarding, 6:30 departure, returns between 8:45 and 9:00 pm, depending on wind and tide!
Infants and Children policy: On Friday evenings, no children under 13 permitted unless special arrangements are made with the Captain. Call 212 786 1204 to discuss. Infants are welcome and a changing or private cabin is available for their cute little needs.
Rain policy: Flexible, and you have options! Generally speaking, we sail rain or shine. But first, we have seen our guests have some of their most fun and memorable trips sailing -- and singing -- in the rain! The captain also recognizes that some folks prefer beautiful weather. Hence, we have a rain policy that is flexible, and drawn from 25 years of experience sailing New York Harbor. Here are the scenarios. 1. In case it starts to rain during the sail, all Ventura guests are offered sheltered cabin space in the beautiful mahogany cabins below. They are also issued emergency rain gear. (And you can take the rain gear home.) 2. If you choose not to sail because of a rainy forecast, you may purchase in advance an optional "rain check" for $25. This is an excellent option and can be purchased several days before the cruise -- even on the day of the sail! The good news is, that rain checks can be applied to any sailing trip we offer, for 100% of the full value of the original purchase price. And BTW -- we really have had some great fun with friends and strangers laughing away together in the main cabin with rain outside (and a yo ho ho and a bottle of rum inside never hurts!) 3. In case of dangerous conditions, such as excessive winds, the captain may cancel the trip, in which case you will receive a refund of the ticket price. Best policy on the water!
Other Ventura sailing parties include...
Corporate: Monday through Thursday the yacht is very popular for private, mainly corporate cocktail party sails for groups between 15 and 35.
Saturday nights: Most popular night for those special b-days that end with a ZERO, an anniversary celebration and family reunions. Or just to celebrate summer with friends!
Sunday byo brunch: Once a month, she offers a BYO-brunch sail that is very popular with families -- you can even bring your dog along for $1 per paw! The Sunday brunch sails (bring your own elaborate snacks or just grab a paper and coffee) is a mellow harbor sail timed around a quiet period in the harbor. By the time we return to the dock the afternoon wind has filled in. Beautiful experience. (Kids under 6 free, 6-12 half price, four leggers $1 per paw!) Depending on the wind, we cruise under bridges, into tugboat basins, and of course to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
On all sails, Ventura is capable of sailing rain or shine! But we do not go in dangerous conditions. Please be aware that harbor weather can differ significantly from weather on land.
Fireworks, full moon and special sails: The yacht also hosts "unpublished" sails on occasion, such as full moon outings, star gazing, even swimming and hiking. A sailing newsletter ("Ventura Sailing News") via email announces these trips. Sign up for the news letter on the company website: www.sailnewyork.com.
In summary, Ventura's different sails are primarily for adults. She is available May throuh October, seven days a week. "Have boat, Will travel" is her motto. Appropriate music plays to match her teak decks, the summer winds, & sailing. Captain Pat or Skipper Jay and crew welcome you aboard personally.
