“Die schöne Müllerin” by Franz Schubert

William Ferguson, TenorÉtienne Guérin, Guitar.

The cycle Die schöne Müllerin (“The Beautiful Maid of the Mill”) is a masterpiece of classical song. Its twenty poems tell the story of a young apprentice who falls in love and becomes infatuated with the millers beautiful daughter. Schuberts setting of Wilhelm Müller's poetry was composed for voice and piano; however this 1978 adaptation for tenor and guitar (by Konrad Ragossnig and John Duarte) casts new light on the piece, offering a remarkable level of intimacy and a unique opportunity to enjoy this quintessential expression of the German lied.

Sung in German with no intermission.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

American tenor William Ferguson has appeared in concert and opera across the United States with The Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, New York City Opera, The Dallas Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Carnegie Hall, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Marlboro Music, The New York Philharmonic, The Boston Symphony, and The LA Philharmonic among others. He holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree from The Juilliard School.

Born in Quebec, Canada, Étienne Guérin was trained on classical guitar with the Montreal-based Uruguayan master Alvaro Pierri at Université du Québec à Montreal. His multiple chamber music collaborations most notably include LHexacorde (a contemporary music-focused guitar ensemble) and Grandbois Flute and Guitar. In 2005-2006, Mr. Guérin partnered with the mythical Québécois comedian Gabriel Gascon in the monumental Platero y Yo by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He served as artistic director and guitarist on Complètement Marteau!!!, a concert based on Pierre Boulez's Marteau sans Maître that toured across Québec.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
