HERE Presents Culturemart 2006 Thursday, January 05, 2006 through Sunday, January 22, 2006
The annual festival of hybrid performance featuring work by HERE’s Resident Artists.
We crave stimulation. One art form alone can no longer contain the flurry of images and sound-bites we experience on a daily basis. Globally, we're multi-tasking, instant messaging, and video blogging—giving and taking words, ideas, images, sounds, and objects all in a single moment. We consume information through digital streams, which leave in their wake, clusters of undigested content.
Hybrid performance, and the artists that create it, embrace the remnants of unconsumed culture and filter it through as many media as necessary to awaken in us a sense of voice, purpose, and understanding. CULTUREMART 2006 provides a laboratory where 16 artists have the tools they need to blur the boundaries between dance, theatre, music, new media, puppetry, and visual art, soldering together new forms to support their vision.
Join us as dance and theatre saturate FreeFall's Clever Hans with dark comedy. Video and musical theatre heighten the irony of Mallory Catlett's WWI atrocity spectacle Oh What War. Vaudeville, puppets, and super-8 projections spark wry sentiment in Taylor Mac's anti-nostalgic anthem, The Lily's Revenge, to name a few examples.
But artists require more than a space to integrate disparate elements into an exiting new work— they need energy and feedback from fellow artists and audience members like you. CULTUREMART is a vital testing ground, a place to sample pieces in their brand new but not fully polished state. Your response as an audience member is a vital part of helping resident artists shape their final production. With a limited number of performances, festival tickets sell fast. Join us for CULTUREMART and let your experience find its way on stage.
