Coraline, Sandman – Books and Imagination – A Conversation with Neil Gaiman

Internationally celebrated author Neil Gaiman has written across a variety of literary fields, including short stories, novels, graphic novels, comics, and films. He is the creator of the enormously popular Sandman series of graphic novels, and Coraline, which was recently adapted to the big screen. Join Gaiman for a discussion of imagination, inspiration, and creativity across a dizzying range of genres with World Voices Festival Director Caro Llewellyn.

2:30–4 p.m.
1,000 Words: The Power of Visual Storytelling

Participants: Emmanuel Guibert, David Polonsky, and Shaun Tan. Moderated by
Jonathan Ames.

What can pictures provide that words cannot? Our panelists have all used pictures to tell challenging and compelling stories: Shaun Tan, from Australia, has imagined the experience of immigration in his wordless book The Arrival; Jonathan Ames, from the United States, has depicted the life of a failing writer in The Alcoholic; David Polonsky, from Israel, illustrated the horrors of the Israeli-Lebanon war in Waltz with Bashir; and Emmanuel Guibert, from France, has documented war in Afghanistan and in Europe in his graphic novels.

4:30–5:30 p.m. Yoshihiro Tatsumi in Conversation with Adrian Tomine

Over 40 years ago Yoshihiro Tatsumi expanded the horizons for storytelling in comics by using the visual language of manga to tell gritty, literary stories about the private lives of everyday people. Adrian Tomine, who has helped bring Tatsumi's work to American readers—and whose graphic novel Shortcomings was hailed as "pitch-perfect" and "daring" in The New York Times—will speak with Tatsumi about the evolution of comics in Japan, the U.S., and around the world.
