The Kandake's latest production observes traditional roles assigned to femininity without fear of the darker side of beauty, innocence, temptation, mystique and other things stereotypically associated with women or girls.
Many women's stories can be taken separately or as one narrative and draw from a dance vocabulary created by and for women in the cradles of humanity and civilization. Forget the hookah bars and sparkly bras. This is not your grandmother's belly dance.
~ On Saturday, October 20th enjoy a fundraising reception hosted by the South Asian Arts & Music Alliance.
~ On October 26th and 27th the Vashti Dance Theatre opens with "Down to the River" an inspiring take on struggle and triumph fusing traditional African and Contemporary dance.
